Samsung finally ships their HL-S5679W LED DLP
We've been waiting on this one for a good long while, but we're pleased to say that if your chosen flavor of TV happens to be a 1080p, LED-based DLP set with 56-inches of screen real estate and a hard to remember model number, Samsung has just the display for you. Their HL-S5679W packs in a 4000:1 contrast ratio, HDMI input, analog/digital tuner, and of course that 20,000 hour lifespan, speedy startup and heat and energy savings provided by the LED backlit pixels. It's shipping now with a MSRP of $4,199, but the word is you can nab one for around $4,000 on a certain proverbial street.

Wow that looks real sweet. Apart from the price, i might have trouble finding a place to put that - 56 inches!

20,000 hour rating on the LEDs.
That is about two an a quarter years.
Then what? I bet that fancy LED array is pricey.
Evinyatar @ Jul 18th 2006 2:54AM
@2: considering that in most homes the television set isn't on for more than 6 hours a day that gives it about 10 years. Also bear in mind that after 20,000 hours it will only just start degrading. That doesn't mean that after 20,000 hours it'll require immediate replacement.

I was curious about the "proverbial street" prices, so I took a look:
$3310 (but I don't see any guarantee of that pre-order price) + $320 shipping (to NY), and tax only if shipped to NJ:
http://www.dependableaudiovideo.com/SAMSUNG-HL-S5679WSAMSUNG-HL-S5679-P23287C0.aspx
$3795 + free "freight" shipping (truck-to-door), tax in CA and WA:
http://www.tvauthority.com/DLP-TV-HDTV/Samsung-HL-S5679W.asp
$3999 + free "white glove" shipping (brought in your home, unpacked, placed on stand, removal of packing materials), tax in VA:

Wobulated?
I'll take a 2nd gen LED(Sam)/or laser(mits) no-color-wheel light engine, and a non-wobulated 1080p DLP chip, with at least 3 HDMI inputs, 3 component, tuner with cablecard 2.0, and using the "Let it Wave" method for all upconversion(introducing insignificant delay). DVR in the software of the set, hard drives are user added via firewire and are not included to keep costs down and sky as the limit. 3 tuners at least, LG chipset for superior OTA reception. Form factor of the RCA DLPs in that thin enough to mount on wall.
Dreaming I know, I would warn anyone in the market to not read avsforum. You will wait forever...just go to the store and look at what looks good to you. Then search avsforum for that model, if no one is making to big a stink about it (and there are a bunch of whiners) go buy it.

Does it have that distractingly weird green I've typically seen on DLPs?
P @ Jul 18th 2006 9:55AM
i want my hdmi 1.3 ...... and this tv in a 50 inch
dweebe @ Jul 18th 2006 10:18AM
P:
I don't think any HDTVs will have hdmi 1.3 compliant inputs until next model year. HDMI 1.3 wasn't standardized until just last month. The press release is dated 6/22/06.
NNTPgrip:
I didn't think this generation of DLPs was wobulated.
But you are right: avsforum.com will drive you mad sometimes. You would think the 37" Westinghouse LCD was a tool of the devil by the way it's derided over there.
Matt @ Jul 18th 2006 11:56AM
Still no non-wobulated single-chip rear-projection DLPs on the market yet. Alas, those chips are all reserved for the $10K+ front projectors.
I would just take a non-wobulated rear-projection that accepts 480i, 480p, 720p, 1080i, 1080p over HDMI with either a Gennum VXP or Silicon Optix chip built in. Is that too much to ask? Please put an end to the DLP macroblocking in my life: action scenes on my 46" Toshiba plus the Oppo 971 end up looking like sh*t sometimes (no jaggies though).

"Does it have that distractingly weird green I've typically seen on DLPs"
The "green blob" effect is seen in LCOS, not DLP.
Agathos @ Jul 18th 2006 1:26PM
Is there going to be a 71in or at least a 61in model in this line in the coming months?
Russ @ Jul 18th 2006 2:29PM
I've been using a Samsung 56" DLP tv for over a year now (my computer's plugged in as a DVR), and it's been great. By the way, is that a photo of Mt. Fuji on a SAMSUNG TV?? I'm really surprised to see that.
dweebe @ Jul 18th 2006 4:20PM
So will we not see any non-wobulated 1080p rear-projection DLP HDTVs until next year?
Perrey Z. @ Jul 18th 2006 5:11PM
The top-of-the-line is a 71" version coming in September, model# HL-S7178W. I don't think 20,000 Hours is enough in my household., the Plasmas and LCDs in here are on for more than 12-hours a day.
Gadget Extremist @ Jul 19th 2006 5:01AM
"certain proverbial street."
What street is he referring to?
matt @ Dec 10th 2006 3:09AM
Don't be run off by the sites that say "20,000 hour" led life on this set! THEY ARE WRONG! this is an LED/laser hybrid and they have ran simulations on this that show a LESS then 10% loss in briteness after 60,000 hours! "it promises to eliminate bulb replacement, 100,000 hour LED life claimed" the LED engine in these is made by LUMINUS DEVICES go to luminus.com to learn more......
