i have not done the upgrade through dell myself but i did try with the actual retail disk. the ironic thing is that i installed vista on 3 computers: a dimension, an inspiron, and a macbookpro. the macbook went flawless and vista was up and running perfect in 20 minutes. for each of the dells, I had countless BSoD's and EACH one too the better part of six hours (after backing everything onto externals and then clean installing, etc). it was a nightmare

my friends and i have updated vista on a wide range of laptops/desktops with dell's included.
flawless flawless flawless. other than BT phone support
